Why You Should Be Using Wallpaper in Bathrooms (Yes, Really!)

Many people still believe that wallpaper in bathrooms is impractical, impossible, or just plain daft — but let’s take a moment to dispel that myth once and for all. For years, wallpaper has been unfairly dismissed when it comes to bathroom design, and yet, with today’s technology and products, it can be not only a viable choice but also a bold, beautiful one.

The Downstairs Loo: A Wallpaper Wonderland

Think about the downstairs loo — the smallest room in the house. It’s often the one place where people feel they have permission to go wild. Crazy patterns, bold colours, whimsical themes — anything goes. And why not? It’s a small space, a guest space, and a perfect place to express personality without fear of overcommitting.

So if we’re comfortable going mad with wallpaper in the WC, why don’t we treat the main bathroom with the same creativity and flair?

Bathrooms Used to Be Decorative, Not Dull

Historically, bathrooms weren’t always the sterile, all-white, minimalist spaces we often see today. In fact, they were quite the opposite — especially for the wealthy. In the 18th and 19th centuries, bathrooms for the upper classes were rich and decorative, complete with ornate tiling, patterned wallpapers, lush colour schemes, velvet curtains at the windows, and even seating areas for lounging and relaxing. These were spaces of indulgence and leisure, not simply places to wash.

Of course, such luxury was reserved for the aristocracy and the upper middle classes. For most people, particularly the working classes, bathrooms were either shared communal spaces or non-existent. Public bathhouses were common in urban areas, while in many homes, washing took place in a tin bath in front of the fire. The privy was often a cold, brick outbuilding at the end of the garden — not exactly luxurious.

The Birth of the Modern Bathroom

It wasn’t until post-war Britain, especially after World War II, that the concept of the modern, self-contained bathroom began to take hold in the average home. With a national push to rebuild bombed-out cities and replace substandard slum housing, new homes were designed to include indoor bathrooms as standard. At last, everything — the bath, basin, and toilet — could be found in a single room inside the house. No more dashing outside in the freezing cold.

Even then, early bathrooms were largely functional. Showers were often little more than rubber hoses attached to taps, offering either scalding hot or freezing cold water. But over time, bathrooms became more refined. The addition of ceramic tiles, fitted cabinets, and eventually electric showers and underfloor heating gave rise to the spa-like bathrooms we know today.

So Why Are We Still Afraid of Wallpaper?

Fast-forward to the present, and homeowners are spoiled for choice. We have basins in every conceivable colour, tiles in endless shapes and materials, extravagant lighting, and high-tech fittings. Yet still, many shy away from wallpaper in the bathroom. The main culprit? Water. More specifically, steam and condensation. The fear is that wallpaper simply can’t cope — that it will peel, warp, or turn into a soggy mess.

Modern Wallpaper Can Take It

But here’s the good news: wallpaper manufacturing has come a long way. Today’s wallpapers are often durable, breathable, wipeable, and even mould-resistant. Some are specially designed for high-humidity areas. Of course, not all wallpaper is created equal — delicate hand-printed papers may still need some extra care. But that doesn’t mean they’re off-limits.

A few years ago, I was introduced to a product that changed everything: Decorator’s Varnish (add link). This clear varnish, available in finishes from gloss to matt (my personal favourite), can be applied over wallpaper to seal and protect it. The result? A waterproof surface that doesn’t alter the look or texture of the paper. It’s a game-changer.
